![]() Frey has somehow mysteriously survived this strange phenomenon, offering Athia a beacon of hope. Players also learn about the impending corruption called the “Break”: a devastating miasma that relentlessly corrupts everything it touches. In the new trailer, fans are given a closer look at the mysterious land of Athia and meet some of its last remaining citizens. The trailer was introduced by Forspoken star Ella Balinska, who plays protagonist Frey Holland, and actor Pollyanna McIntosh ( The Walking Dead series), who has joined the cast as the ruthless Tanta Prav. 9, 2021) – Today at The Game Awards, SQUARE ENIX® and Luminous Productions unveiled a new trailer for the studio’s debut title, Forspoken, announcing a worldwide release date of May 24, 2022. ![]() You can check out the trailer above and read below for more details:Īctor Pollyanna McIntosh Revealed as the Voice Actor for Tanta Prav Pre-Orders Available Now on PlayStation®5 and PC Along with the release date announcement was a new gameplay trailer, which looks incredible. On May 24th, 2022 gamers will be able to pick up Forspoken on the PS5 and PC. However, for the 12-14 hours I played, making my way through the core missions and a handful of additional content, the combat kept me engaged amidst moments of the story making me want to nod off.Forspoken is one of my most anticipated releases of 2022, and I am happy to report that during the Game Awards a release date was announced. ![]() Deep underneath, there's plenty of interesting lore and directions a potential sequel could go if Square Enix were to make one. Although somewhat predictable, the story's direction is put-together well enough, but the game constantly feels oddly paced, like it's the hundredth version of the game's script and pulled together at the last moment. More than a few times, I'd find myself opening my phone in cut scenes with a complete disinterest in what was happening in Forspoken between the moments where I had control of Frey. Forspoken can be a pretty game, but it's worth taking a slight loss on that, so Frey doesn't feel like she's moving as slowly as a boulder. I wouldn't play on less than the performance mode, and I ended up playing most of the game with 120FPS enabled, letting me see more of the action in combat for an acceptable loss to the visuals. I tried playing Forspoken on the "visual" mode, but the speed of Frey, combined with the number of on-screen visuals and enemies at times, make this nearly impossible to play on. Her goal of getting home aligns with assisting those of Cipal for a time, but her end goal isn't to be a hero. Not to spoil anything, but Frey doesn't want to help. It's slowly been spreading and will surely envelop Cipal as well unless Frey wants to help out. Outside the walls of Cipal, the final city for the remaining humans in Athia, a disease has spread that Frey dubs "The Break," which turns whatever it touches into more monsters, except Frey. In a land very different to her own, with a dragon meeting greeting her, monsters on every pathway, and discovering only one town with citizens, Frey is, at first, held in court - but they don't threaten to cut off her head. The bracelet talks however, only she can hear its voice inside her head, and between a bit of the bantering that's now made rounds on social media, she discovers she can do magic and decides to call the voice "Cuff." Taking cues from the very book you can interact with inside Frey's apartment, she is Alice through the looking glass. Part of her wish comes true when one night, she finds a bracelet and is whisked away to the land of Athia. Even if I don't think the dialogue is all that bad, the narrative is weak, predictable, and doesn't do anything as engaging with the story you're playing compared to the fictional history of Athia, the characters in the game are happy to tell you about.įrey Holland has been in and out of foster homes her whole life, she's been arrested for theft multiple times, and she is desperately seeking a way to escape New York City and hopefully find a better life. You'll get the most enjoyment out of Forspoken by unlocking and exploring the different types of magic in the heat of battle, switching up between offensive and defensive spells, and discovering an enemy's weakness. Because it's not a third-person action game about smashing one button, and it's not a third-person shooter where hitting headshots will make a difference. Understanding this is a game about magic and casting spells is the first part of liking it. When I'm running through grass fields, up rocky mountain faces, or leaping between small trees to meet enemies head-on, I'm having a blast playing Forspoken. It's the spell-casting game released at the start of 2023, where the most problematic part of its development is the internet-ruled "cringe" dialogue.
